Traffic Stop Escalates to Officer Emergency in West Mesa, Suspect Taken Into Custody at Gunpoint

MESA, AZ — A traffic stop in West Mesa escalated into a tense officer emergency Thursday evening, prompting a heavy police response, road closures, and air support as officers worked to safely resolve the situation.

According to Mesa Police Department, between approximately 1900 and 1945 hours, an officer advised dispatch that she was behind a Chevy Silverado traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic. Due to the driving behavior, the officer requested backup before initiating the traffic stop.

The vehicle was pulled over near N Harris Dr & E Second Pl. Shortly after stopping, the situation intensified when the driver exited the vehicle on his own and became confrontational. Mesa Police immediately held the radio channel for emergency traffic, and the stop was upgraded to a 913, indicating an officer in urgent need of assistance.

Multiple patrol units responded to the area, blocking nearby roadways as officers arrived on scene and drew their weaponsMesa Police air support (Falcon) was also overhead, providing updates to responding units. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 30s with tattoos, wearing a white tank top and black pants. No other occupants were inside the truck.

The suspect was ultimately held at gunpoint and taken into custody without further incident. No injuries were reported.

At this time, no additional details have been released, including whether the suspect was arrested on charges or if any warrants were involved.
