Single-Vehicle Crash Knocks Down Utility Pole, Shuts Down Northbound Higley Road at McDowell
MESA, Ariz. — A single-vehicle crash Tuesday evening caused major traffic disruptions at a busy Mesa intersection after a car crossed a median and struck a utility pole head-on.
The crash suggested around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, at North Higley Road and McDowell Road. Authorities say a white Toyota Solara crossed over the median/island and hit a utility pole, causing moderate to heavy damage to the vehicle. Airbags deployed as a result of the impact.
Mesa Fire and Medical and Mesa Police responded to the scene. Fire crews evaluated the female driver, who appeared to have no visible injuries. After the assessment, Mesa Fire and Medical cleared the scene and turned the incident over to Mesa Police.
Due to the crash, Mesa Police shut down all northbound lanes of Higley Road at McDowell Road. The utility pole was knocked down and left lying in the roadway, blocking two northbound lanes and creating a traffic hazard.
As of 8:00 p.m., northbound Higley Road remained closed while a tow truck was dispatched to remove the damaged vehicle. City of Mesa crews also responded to handle the downed pole and assess infrastructure damage. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes while crews worked to clear the scene and restore traffic flow.
