Vehicle Swept Away in Agua Fria River Prompts Major Rescue Response; One Still Missing

Agua Fria River, AZ — A large multi-agency rescue response unfolded Sunday morning after severe weather caused dangerous water conditions along the Agua Fria River near Table Mesa Road and I-17.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call around 10:00 a.m. reporting that a vehicle had been swept downstream by fast-moving floodwaters. Multiple units—including Search & Rescue, Lake Patrol, posse volunteers, and the MCSO Aviation Unit—were immediately mobilized.

Rescue teams located the vehicle partially submerged in the muddy water, pinned against heavy brush. In a difficult and technical hoist operation, aviation crews successfully rescued an adult female passenger from the vehicle.
The adult male driver remains missing.

Second Rescue Minutes Later

While the search for the missing man continued, responders spotted a second vehicle also trapped and moving with the current. A deputy operating a drone located both occupants after they climbed out and became stranded along the riverbank.

The MCSO Aviation Unit again responded, hoisting both adults to safety.

Search Suspended Due to Weather

Authorities say worsening weather, rising water levels, and hazardous terrain forced them to suspend the search for the missing male driver. The operation is expected to resume Monday when conditions improve.

MCSO emphasized the dangers of crossing flooded washes, rivers, and moving water—especially during Arizona’s winter storm activity.

“This incident is a powerful reminder of how dangerous moving water can be—and of the dedication of the men and women who respond when lives are on the line,” the agency said.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded crossings, obey closures, and never attempt to drive through moving water.
