DAVENPORT, FL — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday night near a hotel in Davenport, Florida, and is asking for the public’s help in locating the suspected shooter.

Deputies responded around 9:40 p.m. on August 12, 2025, to reports of gunfire at the Home Suites located near the I-4 and US 27 interchange. Upon arrival, they found Elijah Johnson lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Johnson was alert and breathing but unresponsive. Deputies provided life-saving aid before he was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot and seeing a suspect run to a red sedan driven by another person. The vehicle left the parking lot but stopped a short distance away, where the suspect fled on foot into nearby woods.

Vehicle and Driver Located

Shortly afterward, deputies found the red sedan at a McDonald’s near US Highway 27 and Sand Mine Road. The driver, 39-year-old Angel Efrain-Reillo, was arrested without incident.

Shooter Still on the Run

The passenger, 29-year-old Angel Gonzalez-Morales, is believed to be the shooter. He remains at large.

“Angel Gonzalez-Morales should be considered armed and dangerous. If anyone knows where he is or sees him, they should call 9-1-1 immediately. He was last seen walking towards the woods behind the hotels located just east of US 27 and north of I-4,” said Sheriff Grady Judd.
