PHOENIX, AZ — Chaos erupted on Interstate 10 near the 40th Street exit Wednesday afternoon when an unidentified vehicle lost a large piece of equipment — believed to be a driveshaft — causing a dangerous chain reaction of damage along the busy freeway.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), the heavy object struck approximately 15 vehicles, leaving drivers scrambling to avoid the debris. The most severe impact was to a white Audi SUV, which suffered extensive front-end damage and a shattered windshield, rendering the vehicle disabled on the shoulder.

Despite the dramatic damage, no serious injuries were reported. Troopers quickly responded to the scene and safely removed the debris to restore traffic flow.

The driver of the vehicle that dropped the object has not been identified. Investigators urge anyone with dashcam footage or tips to come forward.

“When transporting equipment or materials, it’s critical that everything is properly secured,” said an AZDPS spokesperson. “Unsecured loads can lead to crashes, injuries, or worse.”
