MESA, Ariz. — A 23-year-old Mesa man is facing first-degree murder and felony child abuse charges following the death of a 2-year-old boy, according to the Mesa Police Department.
Mesa police identified the suspect as Kishawn Porter, who was arrested Tuesday, September 29.
The investigation began shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday, when the Mesa Fire Department responded to an apartment in the 400 block of Brown Road for a report of a child in distress.
The 2-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital, where medical personnel attempted life-saving measures. He was later pronounced dead.
According to Mesa police, doctors noticed suspicious bruising on the child's body and contacted investigators.
Homicide detectives began investigating the circumstances surrounding the boy's death and said evidence gathered during the investigation identified Porter as a suspect.
Police arrested Porter later Tuesday at his Mesa home without incident. He was initially booked into jail on a felony child abuse charge.
Following an autopsy conducted Wednesday, September 30, police said Porter is now facing charges of First Degree Murder and Felony Child Abuse Ending in Death.
Porter remains in custody.
Police did not immediately release additional information about the circumstances surrounding the child's death or Porter's relationship to the boy.
The investigation remains ongoing.
