‘AI’ Becomes ‘SI’ Under New Trump Executive Order

WASHINGTON — Artificial Intelligence is getting a new name inside the federal government.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday directing federal agencies to begin using “Super Intelligence,” or “SI,” instead of “Artificial Intelligence,” or “AI,” in official government communications.

The order, signed September 29, applies to executive branch correspondence, public communications, policy documents and other non-statutory materials.

That means Americans could soon start seeing “SI” used in federal documents and government announcements where “AI” would normally appear.

The Trump administration is also looking at whether the term should eventually receive its own federal definition.

Under the order, the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology is directed to propose a definition of “Super Intelligence” and identify any additional executive actions needed to implement it.

The White House says the change is about more than just wording.

In a fact sheet released with the order, the administration said the term “Super Intelligence” better reflects what it sees as the rapidly advancing capabilities of the technology and its potential to expand human creativity and make previously impossible tasks possible.

The White House argues that the term “Artificial Intelligence” suggests technology that simply imitates or automates human intelligence, while “Super Intelligence” is intended to emphasize expanding capabilities and new uses for the technology. That characterization reflects the administration’s view of the technology.

The White House also described the United States as a global leader in the field and said the new terminology is intended to keep federal agencies focused on expanding the technology’s capabilities and applications.

The change comes as the Trump administration continues pushing for greater development and investment in advanced computing and artificial intelligence technologies.

Among the initiatives highlighted by the White House is America’s AI Action Plan, released in July 2025, which included more than 90 federal actions involving innovation, infrastructure and U.S. leadership in the technology sector.

The administration also cited more than $5 billion announced for the Genesis Mission, an effort aimed at using advanced technology to accelerate breakthroughs in science, medicine, energy and manufacturing.

For the federal executive branch, the message is now clear: AI is becoming SI.
