Volusia County, FL — A devastating head-on crash in Volusia County left three people dead and five others seriously injured Monday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:58 a.m. on State Road 40 near Lake Winona Road, west of the intersection.
According to investigators, a 2023 Honda HR-V was traveling eastbound when the driver failed to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to cross into the westbound lane. At the same time, a 2021 Ford Expedition was traveling westbound, resulting in a violent head-on collision when the two vehicles collided.
Authorities say the driver of the Honda, a 21-year-old man from Port Orange, was killed in the crash. Two passengers in the same vehicle also died — a 23-year-old man from Melbourne and a 22-year-old woman from Gainesville. All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The occupants of the Ford Expedition — including a 35-year-old male driver and four passengers ranging in age from 11 to 39, all from Ocala — were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center with serious injuries.
Investigators noted that all occupants in the Expedition were wearing seatbelts, while one of the passengers in the Honda was not restrained at the time of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol, with assistance from Crash Investigator Trooper Taylor and Homicide Investigator Corporal Barack. Identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
This tragic crash serves as a reminder for drivers to slow down and use extreme caution when navigating curves and two-lane roadways, where a single mistake can have deadly consequences.
