Freeway Shooting Suspect Arrested After Two-Hour Standoff Near Greenfield and Southern
MESA, Ariz. — A frightening chain of events that began on a busy Valley freeway ended hours later with a suspect in custody following a lengthy police standoff at a Mesa apartment complex.
According to preliminary information, shots were reportedly fired on the U.S. 60 near Greenfield Road at approximately 3:45 p.m., prompting an urgent response from multiple law enforcement agencies. Investigators say the suspect allegedly fired several rounds while on the freeway before exiting and fleeing the area, triggering a widespread search.
Police eventually tracked the individual to Envision Apartments near Greenfield Road and Southern Avenue, where officers surrounded the unit and began negotiations. Authorities say the suspect initially refused to come out, leading to a tense and prolonged standoff that lasted nearly two hours.
During that time, officers deployed multiple rounds of tear gas and flashbangs — estimated between 5 and 10 deployments — in an effort to safely bring the situation to an end. Negotiators continued working to get the suspect to surrender while ensuring the safety of nearby residents.
At approximately 6:25 p.m., the suspect exited the apartment, reportedly due to the effects of the gas inside, bringing the standoff to a peaceful resolution. Two adults were taken into custody at the scene without further incident.
At this time, no immediate information has been released regarding any injuries connected to the freeway shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine what led up to the gunfire on the highway.
The incident caused significant traffic disruptions in the area as officers secured the scene and conducted their investigation.
