Scottsdale Man Arrested After Firing Shots From Home, Barricading Himself During SWAT Standoff
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Dec. 29, 2025) — A quiet Scottsdale neighborhood was turned into a tense police scene Sunday afternoon after a man allegedly fired multiple gunshots from inside his home, including shots that struck nearby police vehicles.
According to the Scottsdale Police Department, 27-year-old Vaughan Dinetso Hanson was taken into custody following an hours-long barricade near 6700 E. Earll Drive on December 28.
Police say neighbors first called 911 around 1 p.m. after hearing repeated gunfire coming from inside Hanson’s residence. When officers arrived and began securing the area, Hanson allegedly fired several rounds from inside the home—some of them aimed toward responding officers. Two unoccupied Scottsdale police patrol vehicles parked nearby were struck by gunfire.
Officers quickly confirmed Hanson was alone inside the residence and initiated barricade procedures. As a precaution, nearby homes were evacuated while additional resources responded, including SWAT officers and crisis negotiators.
For more than an hour, negotiators worked to bring the situation to a peaceful end. Just after 2:30 p.m., Hanson walked out of the residence and surrendered without further incident. Police confirmed no officers fired their weapons and no injuries were reported.
Investigators later documented damage to two police vehicles, the exterior of a neighboring apartment building, and Hanson’s home. A search of the residence revealed a handgun and multiple spent shell casings inside.
Hanson was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on December 29 and is being held on a $500,000 bond. Court records show the case has been bound over to Superior Court under case number PF2025150573001.
Authorities submitted numerous felony charges, including multiple counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, endangerment, discharging a firearm within city limits, disorderly conduct with a weapon, and possession of narcotic drugs.
Police emphasized that while the charges have been submitted, final charging decisions will be made by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
