Tempe Police Launch Revamped Forensics Team to Better Serve the Community

TEMPE, AZ (iSkyNews.com) — After two years of hard work and leadership from Police Chief Ken McCoy, the Tempe Police Department has officially launched its new Forensic Services Unit — and it’s a major step forward for how the city investigates crime and delivers justice.

The upgraded unit, which became fully active on June 16, is now staffed with four highly trained Crime Scene Specialists (CSSs). These specialists are already out in the field, responding to crime scenes with a whole new level of professionalism, technology, and care.

“Every piece of evidence tells a story,” said Chief McCoy. “Our job is to uncover that story with accuracy and heart. This new team reflects our deep commitment to the people of Tempe.”

From the Ground Up

When Chief McCoy took over the department in 2023, the forensic unit was in rough shape — no clear policies, outdated tools, and little training. So he hit pause. Literally.

He made the bold call to shut the unit down temporarily and start from scratch — building something Tempe could be proud of.

Now, after a six-month training program that included a three-month academy with the Mesa Police Forensic Lab, these four new CSSs are fully equipped to handle all kinds of scenes — from burglaries to homicides.

What the Team Can Do

These specialists are trained to process evidence like:

🔍 Fingerprints (both visible and hidden)
👟 Shoe and tire impressions
🔧 Toolmarks and broken entry points
🩸 Bloodstains and biological evidence
🧬 DNA and trace materials
📷 Crime scene photography and documentation
💀 Serious injury and death scenes (working with the Medical Examiner)

Whether it’s a small clue or a big break, this team is ready to dig in and make it count.

More Than Just Evidence

Tempe Police say this isn’t just about better forensics — it’s about delivering justice with integrity. It’s about being thorough, respectful, and committed to getting it right for victims, families, and the entire community.

“We want the people of Tempe to know we’re listening, we’re learning, and we’re always working to do better,” Chief McCoy added.
