TAMPA, FL — A high-speed pursuit on the Gandy Bridge early Sunday morning ended in a dramatic crash and vehicle fire after a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper attempted to stop a speeding driver.
At approximately 1:00 AM on May 4, 2025, an FHP trooper observed a white Toyota Supra racing eastbound across the Gandy Bridge at 93 miles per hour in a 55 MPH zone. When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated, reaching speeds over 100 MPH.
The trooper initiated a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver near the east end of the bridge. The suspect’s vehicle spun out, veered onto the shoulder, struck a light pole, and burst into flames.
The driver, identified as 31-year-old Brandon Ramnarine of Tampa, was quickly taken into custody and charged with fleeing and eluding law enforcement at high speed. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
A 32-year-old male passenger, also from Tampa, was similarly injured and taken to a nearby hospital. No troopers were hurt in the incident.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the quick actions of the trooper prevented further danger to other motorists. The eastbound side of the Gandy Bridge was temporarily closed while emergency crews cleared the wreckage and extinguished the fire.
The crash remains under investigation.
