Mesa, AZ (iSkyNews.com) — A 27-year-old man is behind bars after a disturbing video surfaced online showing him spraying pesticide on food items inside a Mesa Walmart as part of a so-called social media "prank."
According to the Mesa Police Department, Charles Smith was arrested in connection with the December 19 incident, which took place at the Walmart located at 1955 S. Stapley Drive around 8:30 p.m. Authorities say Smith walked into the store, picked up a can of Hot Shot Ultra Bed Bug and Flea Killer, and began spraying it on fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and even rotisserie chickens—all while filming himself.
Smith recorded the act in its entirety, clearly showing his face, the can of pesticide, and the food items being sprayed. The video was later posted to social media, prompting outrage and concern from the community and law enforcement.
Mesa Police began investigating the same day the video surfaced and, with assistance from the Tempe Police Department, were able to quickly identify Smith as the suspect. He later turned himself in voluntarily and admitted to both theft and the spraying of the pesticide during a police interview.
Thanks to swift collaboration between agencies, Smith was arrested within 24 hours of the department being notified of the incident.
Smith now faces multiple charges:
- Introducing Poison or Harmful Substance (Class 6 Felony)
- Criminal Damage (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
- Endangerment (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
- Theft (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
“This incident underscores the potential dangers of reckless actions disguised as social media pranks,” the Mesa Police Department said in a statement. “We’re proud of the swift and diligent work of our officers and detectives in resolving this case and protecting the community.”
Shoppers who may have purchased fresh items from that location on December 19 are advised to discard them if concerned and report any suspicious symptoms to their healthcare provider.
