PHOENIX, Ariz. — Two Phoenix police officers have been fired and arrested following an investigation into allegations surrounding a violent traffic stop that authorities say was never properly reported.

Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano announced Saturday that former officers Antonio Felix and Luis Vasquez Jr. were taken into custody on numerous charges.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, the charges include aggravated assault, kidnapping, threatening and intimidating, and tampering with evidence, among other alleged offenses.

The investigation centers around a traffic stop involving Felix and Vasquez while they were working as Phoenix police officers.

Investigators say force was allegedly used against the occupants of the vehicle during the encounter. Phoenix Police also determined the incident was not reported through the department's required use-of-force procedures.

Authorities said the officers' body-worn cameras were not activated during the encounter.

The investigation later involved the Tempe Police Department after officers there encountered information connected to the incident. The case was eventually referred back to Phoenix Police, leading to a criminal and administrative investigation into Felix and Vasquez.

As investigators continued gathering evidence and interviewing those involved, both officers were placed on administrative leave.

Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano later announced that Felix and Vasquez had been terminated from the department and arrested.

“Their actions severely undermine trust in law enforcement and violate the standards we expect from those who serve,” Giordano said.

“When we become aware of misconduct, we take action and we hold officers accountable.”

Phoenix Police said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives and the department's Professional Standards Bureau continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Additional charges or administrative findings could be announced as the investigation continues.
