Shipping Container Falls From Truck, Knocks Out Traffic Signals at Major Intersection

TAMPA, Fla. — A large shipping container fell from a tractor-trailer early Wednesday morning, temporarily disabling traffic signals at a busy intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on January 7, 2026, at the intersection of 50th Street and Causeway Boulevard.

Investigators say a tractor-trailer transporting a shipping container, driven by a 52-year-old man from Seffner, was traveling northbound on 50th Street. While the driver was making a left turn at the intersection, the container—reported to be improperly secured—separated from the trailer.

The container struck a traffic signal control box located at the northeast corner of the intersection, knocking it offline and disabling traffic signals for several hours while crews worked to secure the area and remove the container.

Despite the dramatic scene and major traffic disruption, no injuries were reported.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene to manage traffic and assist with the investigation. Tow trucks and utility crews were also called in to remove the container and restore the damaged traffic equipment.

Drivers in the area experienced delays as traffic signals remained down during the morning hours, and officials urged motorists to use caution while traveling through the intersection.

The incident remains under investigation.
