High-Speed Drivers Cause Crash That Seriously Injures Motorcyclist on SR-400
FLORIDA — A high-speed incident involving two vehicles led to a serious crash Saturday evening on SR-400, leaving a motorcyclist badly injured and one driver under arrest, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say the incident occurred around 7:20 p.m. near Milepost 16.5, as an FHP trooper was traveling westbound while responding to a call for service. During that time, the trooper observed two vehicles speeding and overtaking the marked patrol unit.
Authorities say the lead vehicle, a silver Toyota Camry, passed the trooper at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour, weaving through traffic and cutting in front of both the trooper and a motorcyclist in the outside lane.
As the trooper accelerated to initiate a traffic stop, a second vehicle — a Kia Seltos — attempted to follow the same maneuver. Investigators say that attempt failed, and the SUV collided with the motorcyclist while traveling alongside the patrol vehicle.
The impact caused the rider, a 52-year-old man from Plant City, to be thrown from the motorcycle, resulting in serious injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following the crash, the driver of the Kia, identified as 22-year-old Preston Taylor Nascimento of Apopka, pulled over and was taken into custody. He has been charged with reckless driving involving serious bodily injury.
Meanwhile, the driver of the silver Toyota Camry fled the scene and remains unidentified. Troopers are asking anyone with information to contact *FHP by dialing 347.
