Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation Near Chandler and McQueen
Chandler, AZ — An officer-involved shooting is under investigation following a tense incident Thursday evening that began with threats made against a child and ended with a deadly police encounter near Chandler Boulevard and McQueen Road.
According to the Chandler Police Department, the incident began around 5:45 p.m. Thursday when a man contacted police and made threats to harm his young daughter, who was inside a vehicle with him at the time. Officers immediately began communicating with the man in an effort to de-escalate the situation and protect the child.
Police say the man continued to make repeated threats toward the child during ongoing communication. Officers later located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near 210 N. McQueen Road.
During the encounter, at least one officer discharged their duty weapon. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were reported injured.
Authorities have not released the man’s identity, the number of shots fired, or details about the exact circumstances that led up to the shooting. Officials also have not released information about the child’s condition, citing the active investigation.
In accordance with protocol for officer-involved shootings, the investigation will be handled by the Mesa Police Department through the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, which provides an independent review of critical incidents involving law enforcement.
Chandler Police confirmed detectives will be conducting interviews Thursday night and will provide updated information as it becomes available. The investigation will include a review of body-worn camera footage, officer statements, radio traffic, and physical evidence.
