First-Alarm House Fire in Gilbert Forces Homeowner, Dog to Evacuate

2:15 PM UPDATE - Part of the roof has collapsed. Fire has been confirmed in the attic and is currently spreading. Utilities have been secured to the residence.
2:22 PM UPDATE: Most of the fire is above the front door in the center of the home according to fire officials. Fire hot spots were mostly located in the center and front garage area of the home according to the heat signatures from the drone on scene.
3:00 PM UPDATE: Fire is under control. All units are beginning to enter rehab and going back into service soon. Expect delays until all units are cleared.
GILBERT, Ariz. — Firefighters are actively battling a first-alarm house fire in Gilbert that forced a homeowner and their dog to evacuate Thursday afternoon.
The fire was reported at approximately 1:40 p.m. at a residence located at a residence in the area of South Oak Street in Gilbert.

According to fire officials, the fire started in a bathroom and is believed to have originated from an exhaust fan before spreading into the attic.
The fire later extended into the roof area, while smoke spread throughout the home.
Crews from the Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department and Mesa Fire and Medical Department responded to the scene.
As conditions developed, the incident was upgraded to a first-alarm fire, bringing additional personnel and equipment to the scene. A command van, utility unit and the full balance of the first-alarm assignment were dispatched.
Emergency radio traffic indicated firefighters initially transitioned to a roof attack, with crews working to reach the active fire in the attic and roof area.
As fire conditions continued, incident command ordered all firefighters to exit the structure while commanders reevaluated the safest way to continue attacking the fire.
The withdrawal was ordered as crews reassessed fire conditions and their suppression strategy before continuing operations.
The homeowner and their dog were able to evacuate the residence. No injuries have been reported at this time.
As of 2:05 p.m. Mountain Time, the fire remained active and firefighters were continuing operations at the scene.
The extent of the damage to the home has not yet been released.
