Flood Watch Issued as Strong Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Threaten Central Arizona

PHOENIX, AZ — Residents across central and eastern Arizona are being urged to prepare for another round of active monsoon weather Saturday as thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain, strong winds, blowing dust and flash flooding move into the region.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Flood Watch for most of Maricopa County and all of Pinal and Gila counties, with the greatest flooding concern developing Saturday evening and continuing into early Sunday morning.

Forecasters say an increase in moisture and atmospheric instability, combined with an incoming weather system, will support scattered thunderstorms across much of central and eastern Arizona.

Some storms could produce locally heavy rainfall, creating the potential for rapidly rising water in washes, creeks and streams. Ponding on roadways and flooding at low-water crossings will also be possible.

Across south-central Arizona, rainfall totals of approximately 0.50 to 1 inch are expected, with locally higher amounts possible underneath thunderstorms. Portions of the eastern higher terrain could receive 1 to 1.5 inches, with even higher totals possible where stronger thunderstorms develop.

The flooding threat will not be the only concern.

The National Weather Service says storms could also produce strong gusty winds, frequent lightning and areas of blowing dust.

Maricopa and Pinal counties have a 50% to 70% chance of wind gusts reaching at least 35 mph, while there is approximately a 10% chance of wind gusts reaching 58 mph or stronger in portions of those counties.

A few strong to severe thunderstorms will also be possible Saturday afternoon across portions of southwest Arizona and southeast California.

Drivers are urged to use additional caution as storms develop. Flooded roads can become dangerous quickly, especially after dark when water covering a roadway may be difficult to see.

Never drive through a flooded roadway or low-water crossing. Residents in flood-prone areas should also have an emergency plan ready and continue monitoring weather alerts throughout the afternoon and evening.

Storm activity is expected to continue into the late-night hours before conditions begin improving early Sunday morning.
