CHANDLER, AZ — Chandler Police will increase enforcement of Arizona's seat belt and child restraint laws during a nine-day traffic safety detail beginning Monday.
The Chandler Police Department announced it will conduct an occupant protection enforcement detail from Aug. 31 through Sept. 9, with officers focusing on seat belt compliance and proper child restraints.
Police say the goal is to reduce the risk of serious injuries and deaths in traffic crashes by making sure drivers and passengers are properly restrained.
According to the department, unrestrained occupants continue to be a factor in serious and fatal collisions despite seat belts being one of the most effective ways to protect people inside a vehicle.
During the enforcement period, officers will be watching for violations of Arizona's seat belt and child restraint laws. Parents and caregivers are also being reminded to make sure children are secured in an appropriate car seat or booster seat based on applicable requirements.
"As traffic volumes increase, so does the importance of making safe choices behind the wheel," the department said in announcing the enforcement effort.
Chandler Police are encouraging drivers to buckle up on every trip and make sure all passengers are properly restrained before putting the vehicle in motion.
The enforcement detail is being funded through a grant from the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
The detail is scheduled to continue through Sept. 9.
