Officer Gabriel Facio: New Critical Incident Briefing Video Released Following Deadly June Shooting
Apache Junction, AZ - The Apache Junction Police Department has released—and sent directly to iSkyNews.com—a Critical Incident Briefing video that provides new insight into the tragic events that led to the death of Officer Gabriel Facio. The video walks viewers through the moments surrounding the June 2, 2025 officer-involved shooting, an incident that deeply affected the department and the community Officer Facio served with dedication and compassion.
Viewer Discretion Advised
According to the briefing, officers responded to what began as a routine call for service before it suddenly escalated into an armed confrontation. The suspect, 30-year-old Roger Nunez, opened fire on officers, striking Officer Facio multiple times. Responding officers returned fire, hitting Nunez in the torso. He was treated at a local hospital before being booked into the Pinal County Jail.
Nunez faces an extensive list of charges, including first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement, and two counts of disorderly conduct with a weapon. His bond has been set at $2 million cash-only.
Officer Facio—known for his professionalism, kindness, and commitment to the Apache Junction community—fought for his life in the hospital for six days. Despite continuous medical efforts and strong support from his family, colleagues, and residents, he passed away on June 8, 2025. His death remains a profound loss for both the department and the East Valley.
“A little piece of us was lost as Officer Facio took his last breath,” Chief Pooley said. “He was a beloved father, husband, son, brother, friend, and police officer who showed his passion for people through his service to others. His service, spirit, and sacrifice will remain part of our story forever.”
The investigation was handled by the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EVCIRT), a regional coalition involving police departments from Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, and Tempe. The Mesa Police Department led the case. After reviewing all reports, footage, and evidence, the Pinal County Attorney’s Office Officer-Involved Shooting Committee determined the officers’ actions were justified and did not warrant criminal prosecution.
As the community reflects on the video and the difficult moments it captures, many continue to honor Officer Facio’s bravery, sacrifice, and legacy.
