MESA, Ariz. — Nearly 30 fire crews battled a large warehouse fire Sunday evening at Nash Powersports near Elliot and Ellsworth roads in southeast Mesa, sending a towering plume of black smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles.
The Mesa Fire and Medical Department was called to the business around 5:30 p.m. following reports of heavy flames and thick smoke coming from the warehouse.
As firefighters arrived and encountered the growing fire, the incident was quickly upgraded to a second-alarm response, bringing additional crews and resources from across the Valley.
Officials said multiple ATVs and motorcycles were burning inside the warehouse, adding to the intensity of the fire and the large amount of dark smoke pouring from the building.
Firefighters initially attacked the blaze using hose lines from the ground, but those efforts were not enough to bring the fire under control. Crews then transitioned to an aerial attack, using an elevated water stream to pour water onto the burning warehouse from above.
The building's owner said everyone inside was able to safely evacuate. No injuries were reported in the information available Sunday evening.
The fire generated a massive plume of black smoke that rose above southeast Mesa and was visible from several miles away.
Firefighters remained at the scene working to extinguish the blaze and address remaining hot spots.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Additional information regarding the extent of damage to the warehouse and the vehicles inside was not immediately available.
