DAVENPORT, Fla. — A 54-year-old Eagle Lake woman has died following a violent two-vehicle crash that sent both vehicles careening off Ronald Reagan Parkway and into separate oak trees Friday afternoon.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 12:16 p.m. on August 7, 2026, along Ronald Reagan Parkway near Portofino Way in the Davenport area, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and Polk County Fire Rescue responded to the scene, where the two heavily damaged vehicles had come to rest on opposite sides of the roadway. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of Ronald Reagan Parkway were shut down as emergency crews worked the scene.
Woman Dies After Being Rushed to Hospital
Both drivers were transported to local hospitals following the crash.
The driver of a 2022 GMC Terrain, a 54-year-old woman from Eagle Lake, suffered significant head trauma. Despite efforts to save her, authorities said she died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Her identity has not been publicly released in the information provided.
The other driver, identified by authorities as a 31-year-old man from Haiti, was driving a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder and suffered minor injuries.
Vehicles Collided Twice Before Slamming Into Trees
Polk County Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide detectives responded and began reconstructing the moments leading up to the deadly collision.
Based on physical evidence and witness statements, investigators determined that both vehicles had been travelling in the inside westbound lane of Ronald Reagan Parkway before the crash.
According to a witness, the Nissan Pathfinder began moving into the outside lane before suddenly swerving back to the left and striking the side of the GMC Terrain.
The initial impact sent the vehicles away from one another before they collided a second time, according to investigators.
That second impact sent the vehicles travelling in separate directions and ultimately off the roadway.
The Pathfinder reportedly slammed head-on into an oak tree on the north side of Ronald Reagan Parkway.
The Terrain also struck an oak tree head-on, coming to rest on the south side of the roadway.
Images released by the Polk County Sheriff's Office show the aftermath of the crash and the extensive emergency response.
Roadway Closed for Approximately Three Hours
Ronald Reagan Parkway was completely shut down in both directions following the crash, with the closure lasting approximately three hours while investigators processed the scene.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office said no criminal charges are anticipated in connection with the crash, although the Traffic Homicide investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities also said the driver of the Pathfinder was subsequently taken into custody and is being held for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Sheriff's Office did not indicate that the ICE detention was related to criminal responsibility for the collision.
What began as an afternoon drive ended in tragedy for an Eagle Lake family, with investigators now working to complete their examination of the circumstances surrounding the crash.
