SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — More than three years after an Arizona woman disappeared from Scottsdale, a Maricopa County grand jury has indicted a 41-year-old man on a first-degree murder charge in connection with her case.
According to the Scottsdale Police Department, Joseph Ryan Vigil, 41, was indicted on one count of First Degree Murder in connection with the disappearance of Erin Weber, who was reported missing in January 2023 and has never been located.
Weber's family reported her missing after becoming concerned when they were unable to contact her.
In the years that followed, Scottsdale detectives continued investigating her disappearance, serving multiple search warrants, conducting numerous interviews and reviewing digital evidence. Investigators also processed forensic evidence and worked with specialists to analyse physical and biological evidence connected to the case.
Police said detectives continued pursuing new leads and reexamining the investigation as additional information became available.
After more than three years of investigative work, evidence was presented to a Maricopa County grand jury, which returned an indictment charging Vigil with first-degree murder.
Vigil has since made his initial appearance in Maricopa County Superior Court. Because the case is now pending prosecution, Scottsdale Police said investigators will not release additional details about the evidence that led to the murder charge.
Despite the indictment, Weber remains missing.
Her family released a statement following the development, remembering Weber as a beloved member of their family and a loyal friend.
“Erin was our sister, aunt, cousin, niece, and a loyal friend, and she was deeply loved. Together, we grieve her loss. We choose to remember not how she left us, but rather all that she was, and everything she still might have been.”
The Weber family has asked the media and public for privacy while they mourn and said they will have no further comment at this time.
Scottsdale Police Chief Joe LeDuc credited detectives for continuing to pursue the case throughout the lengthy investigation.
“Our detectives remained committed to this case from the very beginning and never stopped pursuing the truth on behalf of Erin and her loved ones.”
LeDuc said the indictment reflects years of investigative work while acknowledging the continuing impact Weber's disappearance has had on her family.
Police said the indictment represents a significant development in the investigation, but investigators remain committed to seeking justice for Weber.
As with all criminal cases, Vigil is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
