Central Florida Weather Outlook: Scattered Storms Expected Sunday Afternoon

CENTRAL FLORIDA — Residents across East Central Florida should prepare for another round of scattered to locally numerous showers and thunderstorms Sunday afternoon as a typical summer weather pattern continues across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Melbourne, storms are expected to develop during the afternoon hours before gradually shifting east toward the Atlantic coast and offshore through the evening. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, isolated strong thunderstorms remain possible.

Forecasters say the main concerns with today's storms include:

  • Frequent lightning strikes
  • Heavy rainfall of 2 to 4 inches in localized areas, which could lead to minor flooding
  • Wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph

Temperatures will climb into the low 90s across much of Central Florida, including Orlando, Kissimmee, Daytona Beach, Melbourne, Vero Beach, Leesburg, and surrounding communities. Combined with Florida's humidity, heat index values are expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees during the peak afternoon hours.

Rain chances range from 40% to 60% across the region, with the highest coverage expected along and east of the Interstate 4 corridor.

Officials remind residents to seek shelter immediately if thunder is heard and to avoid driving through flooded roadways during periods of heavy rain.

Stay weather-aware this afternoon, especially if you have outdoor plans, as conditions can change rapidly with developing thunderstorms.
