LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A tragic crash in Lake County Sunday evening claimed the life of an 81-year-old man and left his passenger seriously injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 6:51 p.m. near the intersection of Griffin Avenue and Grays Airport Road.

Troopers say the man was driving a 2026 Subaru Forester eastbound on Griffin Avenue when, for reasons still under investigation, he failed to negotiate a right-hand curve in the roadway. The SUV traveled off the left side of the road, striking a guardrail before colliding with several trees.
The 81-year-old driver, a resident of Lady Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 79-year-old female passenger, also from Lady Lake, suffered serious injuries in the crash. She was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The heartbreaking crash serves as a reminder of how quickly a routine drive can turn into a life-changing tragedy. Family members had not yet been notified at the time the Florida Highway Patrol released information about the incident.
Troopers continue to investigate what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
