The National Weather Service says Arizona could see a wetter-than-normal 2026 monsoon season, bringing increased storm chances, flash flooding, dust storms, and extreme heat.
PHOENIX, Ariz. — Arizona residents may want to keep the umbrellas, secure the patio furniture, and start preparing now for a potentially active monsoon season.
The National Weather Service in Phoenix has released its official 2026 Arizona Monsoon Outlook, and forecasters say the odds are leaning toward above-normal rainfall across much of Arizona, along with hotter-than-average summer temperatures.
Meteorologists say the strongest chances for above-normal rainfall appear across northeastern Arizona, though much of the state could see increased monsoon activity this season.

A Wetter Monsoon Could Bring Bigger Risks
While more rain may sound like good news for drought-stricken areas, it can also bring serious hazards.
Arizona’s monsoon season is notorious for producing:
- Sudden flash flooding
- Dangerous dust storms
- Frequent lightning strikes
- Strong thunderstorm wind gusts
- Rapidly changing road conditions
Forecasters stress that "above normal" does not mean it will rain every day. Instead, it means overall weather patterns favor more moisture and storm development than what Arizona typically sees.

Why This Year Could Be More Active
According to forecasters, developing El Niño conditions this summer could help increase tropical moisture flowing into the Southwest.
That added moisture could fuel more thunderstorms and potentially increase rainfall, especially during the peak monsoon months of August and September.
At the same time, Arizona is also expected to experience warmer-than-average temperatures, meaning extreme heat will remain a major concern even with increased storm chances.
Historical Average Monsoon Rainfall
Based on 1991–2020 averages:
- Flagstaff: 7.63 inches
- Kingman: 2.69 inches
- Phoenix: 2.43 inches
- Tucson: 5.69 inches
- Yuma: 0.97 inches
Prepare Now
Emergency officials encourage residents to begin preparing before storms arrive:
✅ Review your emergency weather plan
✅ Clear storm drains around your home
✅ Keep emergency supplies ready
✅ Stay weather-aware each afternoon and evening
✅ Never drive through flooded roads
Arizona’s monsoon season officially runs from June 15 through September 30.
Even a promising rainfall season can turn dangerous quickly, especially in desert areas where dry washes can flood in minutes.
