First Rabies Case of 2026 Confirmed in Polk County
LAKE WALES, Fla. — Health officials have confirmed the first positive case of rabies in Polk County for 2026, prompting a public safety reminder for residents to stay alert around wildlife.
According to authorities, the incident began on Saturday, March 21, when a resident in the 1700 block of Masterpiece Road discovered his dog standing over a bat in the yard. It remains unclear whether the dog had any direct contact with the animal.
The bat was collected and sent to a state laboratory in Tampa for testing. Results returned on March 25 confirmed the bat tested positive for rabies, officials said.
As a precaution, the dog involved will remain under quarantine at the family’s home while being monitored.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd emphasized the seriousness of the situation, warning residents not to take risks when encountering wildlife.
“Rabies is a deadly disease, and we urge everyone to stay alert and avoid contact with stray or wild animals acting strangely. If you see something suspicious, call us, don’t take chances with your health,” Judd said.
Authorities are reminding the public that rabies is typically spread through bites or scratches from infected animals, and early action is critical.
Residents are urged to avoid approaching any animal behaving unusually and to report concerns immediately. Anyone who believes they or their pet may have been exposed should contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Section at 863-577-1762.
