From Speeders to Distracted Drivers, AZDPS Motors Take Action on US-60

TEMPE/MESA, Ariz.  Drivers traveling along US-60 between Tempe and Mesa may have noticed an increased law enforcement presence as Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers on motorcycles lined the roadway, watching traffic closely and making stops throughout the day.

According to AZDPS, Highway Patrol State Troopers assigned to the Metro Area Motors Unit conducted a maximum enforcement detail along US-60 between the Interstate 10 and Loop 202 interchanges — a stretch of freeway known for heavy traffic and frequent violations.

Throughout the operation, troopers made 264 traffic stops, focusing on behaviors that put both drivers and first responders at risk. Speeding remained the most common violation, with 134 citations issued, while 57 drivers were cited for improper use of HOV lanes.

Troopers also targeted distracted driving, issuing 46 citations to motorists observed using electronic devices behind the wheel — a dangerous habit that continues to contribute to serious crashes across the Valley. An additional 90 citations were written for various other traffic violations.

The enforcement detail also led to three arrests, highlighting that traffic stops can quickly turn into more serious situations when violations escalate.

AZDPS says details like this are not about writing tickets, but about changing behavior and preventing crashes before they happen. With motorcycles able to maneuver quickly through congested traffic, motors units are often deployed in high-risk corridors to address aggressive and unsafe driving.

Drivers are reminded to slow down, stay focused, follow HOV restrictions, and remain alert — especially in areas where enforcement is stepped up.
