Toddler Rushed to Hospital as Trauma Code After PT Cruiser Crashes Into Light Pole in Mesa
MESA, AZ — A serious crash in Mesa this afternoon left a two-year-old child critically injured and forced the closure of a major roadway.
Around 1:00 p.m., a maroon PT Cruiser slammed into a light pole near University Drive and Hobson, causing extensive damage and prompting first responders to call a trauma code for a toddler inside the vehicle. The child was transported to the hospital in critical condition, and the toddler’s current condition remains unknown.
As of 3:00 p.m., all westbound lanes of University Drive remain shut down, with traffic diverted onto southbound Hobson as Mesa Police and City of Mesa crews continue to manage the scene.
The impact was so severe that the light pole was bent and leaning into the roadway. City of Mesa crews had to saw the pole in half and remove it due to the extent of damage.
Two other occupants were evaluated but were not injured.
Mesa Police remain on scene conducting traffic control as the investigation continues.
