Good Samaritans Rescue Driver After Fiery Crash on Loop 202 in Tempe

Tempe, AZ – November 9, 2025 — Multiple people were injured Sunday evening after a fiery two-vehicle collision on Loop 202 near the AZ-101 interchange, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS).

At approximately 6:35 PM, State Troopers responded to reports of a vehicle stopped and blocking lanes of travel. Moments later, the disabled vehicle was struck by another car, triggering a violent impact that caused one of the vehicles to catch fire.

Before troopers arrived, several Good Samaritans sprang into action, rushing to the burning vehicle. They worked together to extinguish the flames and pull the driver to safety, risking their own lives to prevent a potential tragedy.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies arrived shortly after, providing medical aid and transporting several individuals — including minors — to nearby hospitals. The extent of their injuries has not been released.

Photos from the scene show two heavily damaged vehicles, one with its front end completely crushed and another with its rear section mangled from the impact. Debris and glass littered the highway as firefighters and troopers worked under flashing emergency lights to clear the wreckage.

The crash led to the closure of multiple eastbound lanes for several hours as investigators and cleanup crews worked the scene.

AZDPS issued a reminder to motorists following the incident:

“If your vehicle becomes disabled, move to the shoulder or a safe area if possible. Avoid stopping in travel lanes — it can lead to severe or fatal crashes.”

The agency also urged drivers to remain alert, use headlights after dark, and always slow down and move over for emergency vehicles and flashing lights.

Officials commended the quick-thinking citizens whose bravery prevented further loss of life, stating their actions “aren’t unnoticed nor forgotten.”
