Wrong-Way Driver Stopped on Loop 101 Near Cardinals Way in Glendale
GLENDALE, AZ — A quick response by Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) troopers likely prevented a serious crash Friday night after a vehicle was spotted traveling the wrong way on Loop 101 near Bethany Home Road.
According to AZDPS, just after 8:00 PM, dispatchers received multiple reports of a driver heading southbound in the northbound lanes. The Traffic Operations Center immediately began tracking the vehicle, which had moved onto the emergency shoulder but was still traveling the wrong direction.
A Highway Patrol Trooper quickly located the vehicle and was able to safely get it stopped at the Cardinals Way offramp once there was a break in traffic. Troopers say the driver appeared confused and admitted to entering the freeway incorrectly from Maryland Avenue.
After a field sobriety test, officers confirmed no signs of impairment. The driver was cited for Wrong Way Driving, and her driver’s license has been submitted for re-evaluation.
Officials say wrong-way driving incidents continue to be one of the most dangerous roadway hazards in Arizona.
“This driver is lucky neither she nor other motorists were hurt,” AZDPS said. “Stay alert and be extra cautious when driving at night.”
