Tonopah, AZ – The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) is investigating a multi-vehicle fatal collision that occurred on eastbound Interstate 10 near milepost 89, west of Tonopah, on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
According to AZDPS, the crash, which involved a combination of six commercial motor vehicles, four passenger vehicles, a van, and a recreational vehicle towing a trailer, tragically resulted in four confirmed fatalities. Additionally, two people remain in critical condition, one person was admitted for precautionary care, and five others were treated and released from local hospitals.
Investigation Ongoing
Preliminary findings suggest an initial collision may have triggered secondary crashes, leading to further injuries and fatalities. Troopers are investigating whether blowing dust played a significant role by reducing visibility, a common hazard in the area.
The Arizona Highway Patrol is conducting a detailed investigation due to the complexity of the scene and the number of people involved. Authorities are in the process of notifying the families of those affected and have not yet released the identities of the victims.
Traffic Impacts and Roadway Repairs
The eastbound lanes of I-10 remain closed at milepost 88, with no estimated time for reopening. Westbound lanes were closed temporarily but have since been reopened. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and AZDPS have been working to manage detours and complete roadway repairs as quickly and safely as possible.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes. For real-time traffic updates, visit AZ511.com.
