Wrong-Way Driver Crashes Into Mesa Police K9 Unit After Running Red Light

MESA, AZ — A wrong-way driver collided with a Mesa Police K9 handler late Tuesday night, prompting a major response from law enforcement and emergency crews at the intersection of Higley Road and Brown Road.
According to a Mesa Police Department spokesman, the crash happened around 11:18 PM when a driver traveling the wrong direction ran a red light and struck a marked police vehicle. Inside the vehicle was a K9 officer and their dog.
Despite the severity of the crash, the officer, the K9, and the other involved driver all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities say traffic cameras confirmed the wrong-way driver failed to stop at the red light before the collision. Possible impairment is suspected, and an investigation is ongoing.
The crash was officially classified as a 962, which indicates a collision involving injuries but no fatalities.
