Winter Haven Man Arrested for January DUI Crash That Killed Innocent Driver

Winter Haven, FL (April 15, 2025) — Nearly three months after a tragic wrong-way crash took the life of a man in Winter Haven, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office has arrested the driver they say is responsible — and he was drunk behind the wheel.

According to PCSO, 27-year-old Sergio Nino Ramirez of Lake Wales has been charged with DUI Manslaughter and Vehicular Homicide following the January 25 collision that left Orli Dagoberto Argueta Sanchez, 35, of Honduras, dead.

The crash happened around 4:25 a.m. on State Road 60 at Logistics Parkway, when Ramirez, driving a 2022 Hyundai Sonata, headed westbound in the eastbound lanes and slammed head-on into Sanchez’s 2004 Nissan Sentra.

Sanchez died at the scene.

PCSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit launched a detailed investigation, including obtaining warrants for Ramirez’s blood sample taken at the hospital following the crash. Testing by the University of Florida’s toxicology lab revealed Ramirez’s blood alcohol level was 0.12 — well over the legal limit of 0.08.

Detectives also pulled data from Ramirez’s vehicle, confirming there were no signs of braking or evasive action just before impact.

On Tuesday, April 15, deputies arrested Ramirez and booked him into the Sheriff’s Processing Center. He’s currently being held without bond and is scheduled for First Appearance on Wednesday.

Sheriff Grady Judd issued a strong statement following the arrest:

“An innocent man was killed in that horrendous crash nearly three months ago, but Sergio Ramirez’s life goes on. My detectives are the best at what they do, and they have built a very strong case that should result in Ramirez getting the justice he deserves.”

This remains an active case as PCSO continues its efforts to bring closure to Sanchez’s family and accountability to those responsible.
