Jacksonville, FL – A St. Augustine physician has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for illegally distributing prescription drugs and obstructing justice, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Dr. Scott Andrew Hollington, 59, was convicted of 14 counts of unlawfully distributing controlled substances outside the scope of medical practice and 5 counts of obstructing justice. U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan handed down the sentence in Jacksonville federal court. Hollington was found guilty by a federal jury on July 25, 2023.
The investigation into Hollington began when the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJCSO) tipped off the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), alleging that Hollington was exchanging prescription drugs for sexual favors. Based on those allegations, the DEA deployed five undercover officers to visit Hollington’s addiction clinic between February and July 2022.
During the visits, officers were able to obtain 17 prescriptions for Schedule II, III, and IV controlled substances—including Adderall, Xanax, Valium, and Suboxone—despite having no legitimate medical need. Testimony revealed that Hollington issued prescriptions without conducting physical exams, reviewing patient histories, or checking drug screening results.
In addition to illegal prescribing, Hollington was found to have altered medical records for the undercover officers after being indicted, resulting in obstruction of justice charges.
Three victims also testified during the trial, describing coerced or transactional sexual encounters in exchange for prescriptions. One woman called Hollington a “monster” who exploited her vulnerability while she sought help for addiction. Another described being propositioned for a "sugar daddy" arrangement rather than receiving proper medical care.
The case was the result of a multi-agency investigation involving the DEA, SJCSO, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Ormond Beach Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the State Attorney’s Office for the 7th Judicial Circuit.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kirwinn Mike and Ashley Washington.
