Severe Weather Alert Tornadoes Large Hail and Damaging Winds Possible Wednesday

National Weather Service - A volatile spring storm system is expected to ignite numerous severe thunderstorms across a wide swath of the central and eastern United States on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025, and into the overnight hours.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a Moderate Risk for severe weather — Level 4 of 5 — covering parts of the Mid-Mississippi Valley and Lower Ohio Valley, including cities like Memphis, TN, Evansville, IN, and Jonesboro, AR.

🔥 Key Threats Include:

  • Very Large Hail

  • Damaging Wind Gusts

  • Multiple Strong to Intense Tornadoes

🌀 Severe Weather Breakdown:

💥 Mid-Mississippi to Lower Ohio Valley:

Expect explosive supercell development by late afternoon into the evening, fueled by rich moisture and warm temperatures reaching the upper 70s and low 80s. Strong wind shear will create favorable conditions for rotating storms and long-track tornadoes. The threat will increase after 6 PM local time and persist into the night.

🌪️ Tornado Risk:

The combination of a strengthening low-level jet and powerful upper-level winds will likely lead to the formation of multiple tornadoes, some of which may be strong or violent, particularly after 7 PM CDT.

North Texas to ArkLaTex:

After midnight, elevated supercells are expected to develop across northwest Texas, bringing large hail and damaging winds. As storms become surface-based early Thursday morning, the tornado risk will shift eastward into the ArkLaTex region.

🌬️ Upper Midwest & Great Lakes:

Although conditional, areas like northern Illinois and southern Michigan may see a dangerous setup for all hazards—hail, wind, and tornadoes—depending on how early convection clears. Cities like Chicago and Detroit should stay alert for last-minute changes.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Population at Risk:

  • Moderate Risk Zone: 4.4 million people

  • Enhanced Risk Zone: Over 42 million people

  • Slight & Marginal Risk Zones Combined: Nearly 45 million people

📍 Major Cities in the Risk Area:

• Chicago, IL

• Dallas, TX

• Columbus, OH

• Indianapolis, IN

• Fort Worth, TX

• Detroit, MI

• Cleveland, OH

• Austin, TX
