Severe Weather Threat Midwest April 17 Hail Wind and Tornado Risk Possible

Heads up, Midwest! The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center says strong to severe storms could roll through parts of Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota on Thursday, April 17, especially in the late afternoon and evening.

Areas under a Slight Risk include cities like Omaha, Lincoln, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Davenport. That means there’s a decent chance for:

  • Large to very large hail

  • Strong, damaging winds

  • And possibly a couple of tornadoes

The setup? A mix of warm, unstable air and a strong weather system moving in from the west. Storms could fire up along a front stretching from southeast Nebraska into southern Minnesota. If conditions come together just right, a few supercell storms could form — the kind that can drop really big hail and spin up tornadoes.

Even though some storms might linger into the night, there's a chance they’ll weaken as the atmosphere becomes more stable. But it’s still something to watch closely.

There’s also a Marginal Risk (meaning less severe, but still something to watch) for a wider area — including Kansas City, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Madison.

If you live in or near these areas, make sure you have a way to get weather alerts, and keep an eye on the skies Thursday afternoon and evening.
