The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms across portions of eastern Kansas and much of Missouri on Saturday night, March 22, 2025.
Threat Overview:
🌩 Primary Concern: Isolated severe thunderstorms capable of producing large hail
📍 Affected Areas: Eastern Kansas and Missouri, including Kansas City, Overland Park, Topeka, and Olathe
⏳ Timing: Overnight hours Saturday into early Sunday morning
Storm Setup:
A developing upper-level system moving eastward across the Plains will enhance thunderstorm development overnight. A strong low-level jet over the Upper Mississippi Valley and a secondary jet across Oklahoma/Missouri will contribute to warm and moist advection, leading to increased instability.
As a surface cold front pushes through the region, scattered elevated thunderstorms are expected to develop, particularly from northeastern Kansas into central and northern Missouri.
Severe Weather Threats:
⚠️ Large Hail: Strong mid-level winds and steep lapse rates may allow some storms to develop hail-producing updrafts.
🌪 Tornado & Wind Risk: Currently, the main threat is hail, with a lower risk for damaging winds or tornadoes due to a stable boundary layer.
Stay Prepared:
✔️ Stay weather-aware and monitor local forecasts
✔️ Have a way to receive weather alerts overnight
✔️ If hailstorms develop in your area, move vehicles indoors to prevent damage
