Severe Weather Alert: Moderate Risk of Dangerous Storms Across South-Central U.S. Today and Tonight

UNITED STATES — Forecasters are sounding the alarm for a potentially dangerous day and night of severe weather across parts of the southern and central United States. Several clusters of intense thunderstorms are expected to erupt from central Texas through the ArkLaTex region and into the lower Ohio Valley, carrying threats of large hail, damaging winds, and potentially strong tornadoes.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed areas from the ArkLaTex into southeast Missouri under a Moderate Risk — a level 4 out of 5 — for severe storms this afternoon and evening. This includes parts of eastern Texas, western Arkansas, and southeastern Missouri, where conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the development of dangerous supercells capable of producing EF2 to EF3 tornadoes.

"A very moist and unstable air mass is in place, with dew points in the low 70s and favorable upper-level dynamics," meteorologists explained. "This environment, combined with powerful wind shear, is primed for the development of rotating storms, some of which could produce strong, long-track tornadoes."

Key Concerns for Today and Tonight:

  • Tornadoes: Several tornadoes are possible, including a few strong to potentially intense tornadoes in the Moderate Risk area.

  • Large Hail: Hail up to baseball size could accompany the most severe storms, especially with supercells.

  • Damaging Winds: Widespread damaging winds are possible, particularly with organized clusters of storms moving along a developing frontal boundary.

  • Flooding: Training storms could also bring a risk of localized flooding, particularly where multiple rounds of storms track over the same areas.

The most concentrated storm activity is expected to develop along the frontal boundary from northeast Texas through Arkansas and into southeast Missouri. Storms are forecast to intensify by early to mid-afternoon, with isolated activity also possible further east into western Tennessee and Kentucky.

Overnight, storms are expected to continue developing, particularly from the Edwards Plateau into north Texas and potentially southeast Oklahoma. These storms will maintain the risk of large hail and damaging wind gusts as they push eastward.

Public Safety Reminder:

Residents in the affected regions are urged to remain vigilant, keep multiple ways to receive warnings, and have a safety plan in place, especially as storms may continue into the overnight hours when people are more vulnerable.
