Savannah Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Possessing Firearms Used in Two Deadly Shootings

Savannah, GA – A convicted felon who illegally possessed two firearms used in separate fatal shootings has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida.

Victor McMillar, 33, of Savannah, was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge R. Stan Baker after being found guilty by a federal jury on October 24, 2024. McMillar was convicted on two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Judge Baker recommended that McMillar serve his sentence at a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility “as far from Savannah as possible.”

According to court testimony, the first incident occurred on November 3, 2018, when McMillar fired eleven rounds from a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol into a vehicle carrying a husband and wife on a residential Savannah street. The husband died from his wounds, while the wife survived but sustained permanent injuries.

Just two days later, McMillar allegedly shot and killed an acquaintance who had witnessed the first shooting. This time, McMillar used a Glock .40 caliber pistol, firing eleven rounds and striking the victim in the head at least three times. Investigators later discovered that McMillar had planted the Smith & Wesson pistol—used in the first shooting—on the body of the second victim.

DNA from the Smith & Wesson pistol matched McMillar. Further evidence collected by federal agents included photographs of firearms stored in McMillar’s iCloud account, which he had attempted—but failed—to delete. One of the photos, dated October 22, 2018, showed a pistol identical to the murder weapon. Forensic cellphone data also placed McMillar at the scene of both killings.

Though McMillar was acquitted of murder charges in Chatham County Superior Court in October 2023, federal prosecutors pursued weapons charges under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a national initiative aimed at reducing violent crime.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and the Savannah Police Department. It was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rachel Lasry and Frank Talbot from the Middle District of Florida.
