Maricopa, AZ - A violent confrontation in Maricopa ended in gunfire after a wanted felon shot and wounded a Maricopa police officer, prompting officers to return fire, ultimately killing the suspect.

According to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), the incident occurred on February 27, just before 2:50 PM, when Maricopa police officers spotted 38-year-old Keith Tyler Prock, a known violent felon with outstanding warrants, at the Circle K on 18141 N. John Wayne Parkway.

As officers approached, Prock attempted to flee. During the chase, he pulled out a black handgun and opened fire, hitting one officer multiple times. A second officer returned fire while Prock continued shooting at both pursuing officers.

Two MPD detectives, driving an unmarked vehicle, joined the pursuit. As Prock kept firing, one detective shot back from the passenger seat while their vehicle struck Prock, bringing the confrontation to an end. Prock died at the scene.

Officials confirmed that Prock had an extensive violent criminal history and was linked to a major gang.

The injured officer was transported to a Valley hospital, where they remain in serious but stable condition.

As part of protocol, one MPD officer and two MPD detectives have been placed on paid administrative leave—a standard procedure following officer-involved shootings. Authorities emphasized that this does not indicate any wrongdoing.

Maricopa Police Chief Mark Goodman addressed the incident, stating: “This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers face every day to keep our community safe. Our department is like a family, so when one of us is hurt, we all feel it. Thankfully, our officer survived, and their prognosis is positive. However, they sustained serious injuries that will take time to heal.”

Body-worn camera footage from the officers involved captured the lead-up to the shooting. The detectives were not equipped with body cameras, but the footage obtained by iSkyNews.com provides insight into the intense confrontation.
