Freightliner Overturns After Chain Reaction Crash on I-275 in Hillsborough County

Hillsborough County, FL — A morning crash on southbound I-275 near Mile Marker 39 caused a Freightliner truck to overturn and sent one driver to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

The incident occurred around 9:34 AM, just north of Westshore Boulevard. Authorities say Vehicle 1, a Mercedes van driven by a 47-year-old man from Land O’ Lakes, was traveling in the outside center lane when an unknown vehicle suddenly cut in front of him.

In an attempt to avoid a collision, the driver of the van swerved left into the inside center lane, striking Vehicle 2, a Freightliner truck driven by an 18-year-old man from Largo.

The impact caused the truck to veer into the center median and overturn. The Mercedes van came to a controlled stop on the inside paved shoulder. The driver of the van was uninjured, while the Freightliner driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The vehicle that allegedly initiated the chain reaction by cutting in front of the Mercedes has not been identified. The crash remains under investigation.

Expect delays in the area as crews continue to clear the scene.
