HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — Tragedy struck Wednesday afternoon when a serious two-vehicle crash occurred on US-301 at Fairway Meadow Drive, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and serious injuries to a third, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The collision happened at approximately 3:01 PM when Vehicle 1, a Subaru Outback driven by a 76-year-old woman from Lithia, was traveling southbound on US-301. At the intersection of Fairway Meadow Drive, she attempted to make a left turn — directly into the path of Vehicle 2, a Volkswagen Tiguan driven by a 44-year-old woman from Ruskinheading northbound.
The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles. All three individuals involved — the two drivers and an 80-year-old male passenger in the Subaru — sustained serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
FHP later confirmed that the driver of the Subaru and her 80-year-old male passenger, both from Lithia, succumbed to their injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
Law enforcement and emergency personnel quickly responded to the scene, which was closed for several hours while investigators reconstructed the crash and cleared debris from the roadway.
The investigation by Florida Highway Patrol remains ongoing.
